gedit: How to Switch from Tabs to Spaces

How to switch from tabs to spaces for indentation in the gedit text editor:

1. In the status bar, click on Tab Width.
2. Check the box next to Use Spaces.
3. If you do not see the status bar, go to Edit > Preferences.
4. Switch to the Editor tab.
5. Check the box next to Insert spaces instead of tabs.
